The Mug Up exhibit will highlight cultural heritage and local contributions through the story of the Cannery Caretakers, the South Naknek residents whose skills and knowledge of the boats, the buildings and their individual functions maintained the cannery year-round. Most caretakers were descendants of Katmai, who migrated downriver and established South Naknek when Novarupta volcano destroyed Savonoski village and created the Valley of 10,000 Smokes in 1912.

“The model will depict both the cannery and the village, which represent the mixed heritages of the local community. It will also reveal the cannery buildings that convey local influence and experiences.”
